Rock ‘n’ Roll Race Route to Highlight Savannah’s Best

Flat, scenic course will showcase city’s history, natural beauty

Registration is now open for inaugural race on November 5th

Savannah, GA – April 27, 2011 – The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is growing its southern roots with a running tour of one the country’s most scenic cities at the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon. Savannah’s charm and rich history will be highlighted to more than 15,000 participants from across the country on Saturday, November 5th.

The event will offer participants a unique race experience with musical entertainment along both courses. Local bands, cheerleaders, and thousands of spectators will create a party-like atmosphere and provide motivation for runners and walkers as they push through 26.2 or 13.1 miles.

“We are very excited about the impact of the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon on the entire Savannah community,” said, Joseph Marinelli, President of Visit Savannah. “With 15,000 runners and their friends and families in town, not only will the hotels, restaurants and trolley-tours be busy, but so will area gas stations, drug stores and shopping malls.  I believe it will be the closest thing to a Super Bowl that Savannah has seen yet!”

The inaugural race will start downtown at historic City Hall, winding through west Savannah and back downtown past cheering spectators before touring the beautiful homes of Gordonston. Marathon runners will loop through the majestic oak trees in Daffin Park, past William Grayson Stadium and Savannah State University. Both courses will finish alongside the Forsythe Park with views of the iconic fountain and near several of downtown’s famous “jewel box” squares.

Participants, family and friends can celebrate and relax at the finish line festival and enjoy live music at the post-race concert in Forsythe Park.

“Savannah has so much history and is a really unique experience for runners, especially those who are unfamiliar with the area,” says Malain McCormick, Event Director. “This course will offer the perfect tour of the area’s natural beauty, history and eclectic architecture. We’re so excited to showcase this great city.”

Runners can get prepared for race day at the Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday, November 3 and Friday, November 4. A runner’s ultimate resource, the Expo brings together nearly 100 exhibitors offering the best in gear, nutrition, and training along with legendary running experts and athletes hosting interactive clinics. The event is free and open to the public.
