Competitor Group Announces Continued International Expansion

  • Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Series agrees to two new partnerships for international events in 2012
  • Oasis Marathon & ½ Marathon de Montréal to become part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series
  • Portugal Half Marathon to rebrand as Rock ‘n’ Roll Portugal as part of three-event partnership

San Diego, Calif. – Competitor Group, Inc (CGI), the leading media and event resource in the active lifestyle industry, announced the continued international expansion of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series into Montreal, Canada and Lisbon, Portugal.

“It’s tremendously exciting for us to come into these relationships with the Montreal Oasis Marathon and Maratona Clube de Portugal,” said Peter Englehart, CEO of CGI. “It creates an opportunity and is a perfect alignment that Montreal and Lisbon are two of the best cities in the world to attract runners to. We take special care in choosing destinations we know that runners will love and these are world-class events with two of the top race directors in the industry.”

CGI has reached a partnership with the Marathon Oasis de Montréal, which will be rebranded in 2012 as the first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event in Canada. The 2012 Oasis Marathon & ½ Marathon de Montréal, part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, is set for September 23, 2012. The race expects to draw more than 25,000 runners in events held throughout the weekend, which include a marathon, half-marathon, 10k, 5k races and 1k kids run.

The new Portugal partnership includes three events: the RTP Portugal Half Marathon Vodafone, the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon, and Lisboa A Mulher e a Vida 5k EDP, a women’s only race that annually attracts nearly 15,000 runners. Each half-marathon also includes a shorter distance Mini Marathon, which starts and finishes at the same location and allows for wider participation. All three events take place in Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal, and together combined to welcome more than 70,000 participants in 2011.

Both the RTP Portugal Half Marathon and EDP Lisbon Half Marathon are IAAF Gold Label Races, the highest certification in road running by the International Association of Athletics Federations. Only September’s RTP Portugal Half Marathon Vodafone and Mini Marathon EDP will be rebranded next year as the RTP Rock ‘n’ Roll Portugal Half Marathon Vodafone.

Portugal’s first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event will take place next September and also includes a Mini Marathon sponsored by EDP. The renamed event will provide runners with a musically themed 13.1-mile course starting on the Vasco da Gama Bridge weaving along the River Tagus and past Lisbon’s historic landmarks, rich architecture, spectacular churches, and numerous cultural attractions.

“Running is truly a global activity and we could not have found better partners to help build the Rock ‘n’ Roll brand and engage more people around the world to embrace the active lifestyle,” added Englehart. “With the growing numbers of affluent participants in the running sector, I’m excited by the scope of these opportunities and the enormous business potential that spans events, media, marketing and new digital enterprises.”

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series began in San Diego in 1998, combining elite competition, recreational running, musical entertainment and charity fundraising into a single event. Acquired during the formation of CGI, the series of musically themed marathons and half-marathons has expanded across the U.S. from five events in 2008 to 18 events in 2011. With the addition of the Montréal Marathon and Portugal Half Marathon, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series will feature events in 28 major markets around the world in 2012.
