Rodney Atkins to Headline St. Jude Country Music Marathon & 1/2 Marathon presented by Nissan
Nashville, Tenn., (Feb. 3, 2012) – Country star Rodney Atkins and special guest, Gloriana, will lend their voices to support the 13th annual St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon presented by Nissan. Continuing the tradition of combining great country music with Nashville’s premier running event, Atkins and Gloriana will cap the weekend of festivities with a post-race concert at the Bridgestone Arena on Saturday, April 28.
The musically themed road race attracts more than 30,000 runners, walkers and 6,000 junior racers through ING KiDS ROCK Nashville, who will take on the 26.2 and 13.1-mile courses while passing many of Nashville’s best live bands along the route.
“For all these people to come out and push themselves to this great of a length for such good cause is exciting and definitely something to celebrate,” shared Atkins. “It will be a fun night and I’m looking forward to being a part of it all.”
The festivities will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. This year marks the 50th anniversary of St. Jude and its lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children.
“Since opening its doors in 1962, St. Jude has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases through pioneering research breakthroughs and unparalleled patient care,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. “Our lifesaving work would not be possible without the support of the public, including running enthusiasts and our St. Jude Heroes participating in the St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon.”
Event weekend will kick off the marathon weekend with a free Health & Fitness Expo on April 26-27 at the Nashville Convention Center. There, participants will pick up their race numbers, enjoy free samples and attend interactive clinics on fitness-related topics, such as nutrition and running gear.
“The St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon presented by Nissan continues as a marquee event in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series,” said Adam Zocks, the event’s vice president and general manager. “We are thrilled that Rodney Atkins and Gloriana will perform at this year’s post race concert and are proud that so many participants return year after year to experience the event and everything Nashville has to offer.”
