Marathon Officials Announce Increased Security Measures

Heightened security and public safety protocol in response to the tragedy in Boston; Weekend tributes planned to highlight the resiliency of the running community in the wake of the tragedy on Patriots Day

  • Increased public and private security presence at the expo, start and finish lines and along the course, with more than 150 private security officials added to the staffing plan.
  • Additional security will monitor the Gear Check vehicles that will be used for storage and transportation of gear bags at both the start and finish line venues. 
  • Clear Gear Check bags will be provided to all runners at the Expo. 
  • Security will control entry and exit into the 32 runner corrals at the start line.
  • All participants, spectators and volunteers may be subject to random bag checks at the Health & Fitness Expo and on race day.
  • All members of the media and others with access to restricted areas will be required to produce a photo ID and all bags and equipment will be subjected to inspection.
  • Runners and spectators please will need to prepare for delays surrounding race weekend as event officials ensure a safe event.

 The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and its federal partners are urging citizens to watch for suspicious behavior, including unattended packages, backpacks, etc., and report what they see to law enforcement. 

Race day will begin with a moment of silence prior to the start of the marathon. CGI has joined organizations representing all facets of the running industry came together to form an industry coalition Run Now in response to the Boston Marathon tragedy. Over 100,000 ‘Run Now – Boston 04.15.2013’ tribute wristbands will be distributed to participants and spectators throughout event weekend in Nashville.

Runners and spectators will also be able to visit a Boston Marathon honor booth at the expo to make blue and yellow ribbons to pay tribute to the tragedy. 

 RunNow.com will become the hub of information on volunteering, participating and sharing all of the activities that demonstrate the solidarity of the running community. Other components of the movement include free race entries pledged to 4,500 Boston Marathon participants diverted prior to the finish. The Run Now group has also established a goal to raise $1 million for The One Fund Boston by National Running Day on June 5, 2013.
