Providence, RI – May 9, 2013 – Ever watched a marathon from the sidelines and wondered what it would be like to participate? In its 3rd year, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon is offering a brand new race option for beginners and those wanting a shorter distance. The new Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Mini Marathon is a 5k (3.1 mile) journey through the unique neighborhoods and stunning scenery of Providence when the race returns on Sunday, September 29.
The new race option will complement the existing 13.1 mile half marathon and two-person half marathon relay, in which teams of 2 tackle either a 5 or 8 mile leg. Beginners can experience the excitement of the start line and the accomplishment of reaching the finish, while receiving the same perks and race day experience as all other participants. All runners will receive a Brooks tech tee, goodie bag and finishers medal, as well as access to the post-race concert and Michelob ULTRA beer garden for those 21 and up.
“For many people, getting that first taste of the camaraderie along the course, the euphoria of crossing the finish line and the sense of accomplishment afterwards, is really the first step toward longer distances. The mini marathon really offers that chance for people to say, ‘I can do that’ and come out and join us,” said Kim Messey, Event Director. “It also gives runners the choice to share the day with a friend or family by participating in the relay, or tackle an individual feat on their own.”
The mini marathon course will start and finish at the same time and location as the half marathon, and follow the half marathon course for 3.1 miles before diverting back to the finish. The race will be timed.
Runners start and finish in beautiful downtown Providence, under the shadow of the iconic State House, and tour the city’s unique neighborhoods, tree-lined streets and stunning waterfront. The unique race format features live, local bands, motivating cheerleaders and spectators along every mile to keep runners moving all the way to the finish line. A post-race concert and finish line festival will greet runners as they finish, giving them the opportunity to celebrate with friends and family.
Runners who sign up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Mini Marathon before May 15, 2013 will receive a special $30 introductory price. Half-marathoners can also save by registering on May 13 as part of the LUCKY13 promotion. A price increase is set to take place on May 15.
