Raleigh, NC – October 25, 2013 – The sights and scenery of the City of Oaks will be on display for thousands of runners from across the country as the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon & ½ Marathon presented by WRAL debuts on Sunday, April 13, 2014.
Race organizers announced the route for the inaugural race, which will start and finish downtown. Runners will start at Memorial Auditorium on W. South Street, running past the Capital Building, Governor’s Mansion and Rose Garden with views of the North Carolina State campus, PNC Arena and the stunning Oakwood area before finishing near the Raleigh Amphitheater.
“The route really offers a beautiful balance of urban and rural views and highlights the unique neighborhoods, tree-lined streets and landmarks that make Raleigh so special,” said Alan Culpepper, 2-time Olympian and Vice President of Events. “The springtime blooms and temperatures will also make this an ideal race and we’re excited to showcase this beautiful city to our runners.”
The race will cap off a full weekend of events, with music taking center stage throughout. Live bands will play each mile of the course, along with enthusiastic cheerleaders and motivating spectators. Upon completing their 26.2 or 13.1 mile accomplishment, runners will gather with friends and family at the finish line festival and post race concert.
Race weekend will begin with a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Raleigh Convention Center where all participants go to pick up their race number. The expo will feature dozens of running and fitness retailers, exhibits with free nutritional samples and a series of interactive clinics with running experts and pro athletes.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series started as a single race in 1998 and is now the ‘World’s Largest Running Series’ featuring a global tour schedule of 32 events in 2013. Over the 16-year history of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, charity participants have raised more than $295 million for a variety of causes.
