19+ One Marathon Team Set to Rock Arizona
In 2012, firefighter Jesse Steed ran the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon. Just a year and a half later, on June 30th, 2013, Steed was among 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots Crew who lost their lives while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire, north of Phoenix. It was the greatest loss of life from a U.S. wildfire in 80 years. Only one survived.
They were fathers, sons, brothers, and friends. Michelle Teeling’s husband grew up with the Steed family. She says learning about the brave men and their families, she was driven to do something. The 19+One Marathon Team was born, and on Sunday, January 19, 2014, 40 runners will participate in the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon with 20 names on their shirts and in their hearts. Many of them will be running their very first distance race.
“We have siblings, girlfriends, fellow hotshots, and community members who wanted to help. Each of us were touched in some way. This team, my new found family, is running with pure heart for those we lost and the loved ones left to pick up the pieces,” said Michelle. “Training for a full or half marathon takes complete hard work, sacrifice and dedication, which seems fitting considering who we are running for.”
The group is training in Prescott and in Phoenix and aims to raise more than $19,000 for the Prescott Fire Fighters Charities’ Granite Mountain Family Fund. Donations are being accepted at http://www.gofundme.com/19plus1 .
