Meet Slow New Fast | Nikki

Ever wonder who’s standing next to you in your corral at the start line, or cheering you on when you’re about to give up during a race? We’ll be featuring guest bloggers that have a passion for Rock ‘n’ Roll and inspire us by their dedication and commitment to the sport of running. You may recognize their faces, but the purpose of these posts is to put a face behind the name to better understand their journey to self-discovery.

Today’s post comes to us from guest contributor Nikki Scott, author of Slow is the New Fast. Against all odds this native to Surrey, BC found the determination to challenge her own limits, read her story!

I broke my back in a serious car accident in 2005 and was told that I would always be in so much pain I’d never be able to run or be active again. After years of physical therapy I was still in pain but didn’t want to spend the rest of my life sitting around hurting. I wanted to prove them wrong so I set the goal of learning to run again.

Learning to run was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Every step was a challenge but as I got stronger I found I was able to better manage my pain so I just kept running. I finished my first half marathon in 2008 and have gone on to run countless more, 3 full marathons and even 2 ultra marathons. Running gave me my confidence back and helped me feel more like myself again. The doctors helped me get better but in the end it was running that saved my life.

When I first started running I always wanted to go do a big, exciting race and Rock ‘n’ Roll was it. Great locations, big expos, all that music and excitement! I finally got to run Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle in 2012 and loved it so much I signed up for Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas too. I ran Seattle last year too and the weekend trip with girlfriends is becoming a bit of a tradition!

I am so happy to welcome my favourite race series to Vancouver. I love that Rock ‘n’ Roll will give other runners the chance to come have fun and run in our beautiful city. Rock ‘n’ Roll Vancouver is already shaping up to be an awesome who’s who of the running community and I can’t wait to celebrate together!

If you’re considering a Rock ‘n’ Roll event in 2014, make Vancouver your pick! One of the most beautiful cities in the world for a run and the excitement of an RnR event…it doesn’t get much better than that!

Fun fact about Nikki: “I have a soft spot for running in costume and ran the Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas half marathon dressed as Elvis of course!”
