Washington, D.C. – February 5, 2014 – It will be a historic weekend for thousands of runners, many of whom will be accomplishing the goal of a lifetime by reaching the finish line of the Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon & Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield Rock ‘n’ Roll USA ½ Marathon. For others, it will simply be a day of celebration and fun as music and fitness combine for the ultimate race experience on Saturday, March 15.
In its 3rd year, the race now includes a new 5K (3.1 mile) option, welcoming runners and walkers of all abilities to challenge themselves and experience how much fun a Rock ‘n’ Roll race course can be. The sounds of live, local bands will greet participants at each mile, along with motivating cheerleaders and encouraging spectators.
“The 5K is a popular event because it motivates those who have been unsure of their fitness or intimidated by the marathon distance to finally come out and join us,” said Adam Zocks, vice-president and general manager. “Very often we see participants return the following year to tackle a longer mileage in the half marathon. Rock ‘n’ Roll is all about providing a welcoming, fun atmosphere where everyone can accomplish their own personal goals, no matter how big or small.”
Rock ‘n’ Roll USA offers unmatched scenery in the form of iconic landmarks from start to finish. Runners will gather on Constitution Avenue, and will view the White House on the right and the stunning Washington Monument on the left as they head toward George Washington University. The course then loops back towards the National Mall and Lincoln Memorial, passing West Potomac Park and crossing the Arlington Memorial Bridge. Marathoners will view the US Supreme Court and US Capitol building before enjoying more than 3 scenic miles along the Anacostia River’s waterfront. The race is the only marathon run entirely within the District of Columbia.
After finishing, participants will enjoy a new finish line area at RFK Stadium, more than twice the size of last year’s. The new venue will offer better flow as runners come through the finish line, as well as more room for crowds enjoying the festivities. Race organizers have announced a series of race improvements for 2014, including a more efficient gear check process using UPS trucks and additional staffing at water stations along the course.
The Head and The Heart will perform as the headline concert at the finish line festival. The show is free and open to the public.
Marathon weekend kicks off with the Health & Fitness Expo at the DC Armory Thursday and Friday. The Expo, which is free to the general public, features interactive activities, educational sessions and expert speakers along with 80 exhibitors providing free samples, giveaways and health and fitness information.
Family, friends or residents interested in getting involved are asked to consider volunteering. Positions are available at the Expo, or on race day. Information on how to sign up can be found online at RunRocknRoll.competitor.com/usa/volunteer.
