RUN, ROCK, RECYCLE
RUN ROCK RECYCLE | How Marathon Warmup Gear Supports Women & Children in Need
American Textile Recycling Service is the official clothing & shoe recycler of the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2. Serial runners may recognize our Green Recycling Fairies from other sponsored Rock ‘n’ Roll races across the nation. Our volunteers are always at the start line in their signature “ATRS RECYCLE HERE” tees, and runners know that any warm up gear dropped on the course will be picked up and recycled. But did you know that donating your clothing & shoes is also a charitable action?
Every pound of warmup gear, running apparel or shoes collected at the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona will directly benefit the Weldon House, an innovative nonprofit organization that exists to help at-risk women live safely with their children while becoming self-sufficient and independent. Providing everything from a fully-furnished apartment and basic living needs to transportation, counselors and support groups, the staff at Weldon House dedicate all their resources to these families in transition.
As part of our partnership with Weldon House, ATRS provides an ongoing stream of monthly financial support generated from pounds collected at every Clothing & Shoe Recycler bearing the charity’s name. These recyclers are hosted by retailers, property managers, shopping centers and other local businesses throughout Arizona. To date, this partnership provides the highest source of funding the organization receives. Without this funding source and the endowment from the United Way, Weldon House would not be able to keep their doors open.
Supporting the women and children of Weldon House during the Arizona Marathon/Half is easy, and there are two ways to do it. First, visit ATRS Booth #119 during the Health & Fitness Expo to drop off your unwanted clothing, shoes or household textiles. This is an optimal donation option for many runners who will be replacing their worn out shoes or running gear as they shop the latest trends at Brooks, Sports Authority and Moving Comfort. Our team will be available to collect whatever you no longer want, regardless of the condition! Bring the kids for a photo opp with the ATRS Recycling Fairy and showcase your green spirit on social media.
Your second opportunity to support Weldon House is on race day. Consider wearing an extra layer or two to keep warm before the marathon, then drop these unwanted textiles on the corral rails – or just on the course once the race starts. Even ponchos or old blankets can be donated in this manner. It’s a simple as that!
A small action on your part can mean the world to a local woman and her family seeking a fresh start in the new year.
