The City of Roses rolled out the welcome mat for 10,000 entrants visiting from 10 countries and 48 states with cool, cloudy conditions and no rain. As a leukemia survivor, Lynnette Wilcox is an inspiration to the team of athletes preparing for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland Half Marathon. As they gather each week in Portland’s parks to train, they hear stories like Lynnette’s and are reminded of the reason they joined the team – to raise funds to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s cancer research. Portland Gets Ready to Rock ‘n’ Roll as Rose Festival Kicks Off

Live bands will mark every mile along the route, enlivening the race experience with a wide variety of Portland-borne sounds. Local acts like Geno Michael & Soulcity (soul/funk/R&B), Randy Foote & the Skankin’ Yankees (reggae) and Running with Scissors (rock) will mix with diverse styles like Portland Taiko, a group of Japanese drummers, and Portland School of Rock, fronted by local students who play like professionals.
