Leading the 20,02o half-marathon finishers, were two Texans who arrived at the finish line less than one second apart.
After racing the entire 13.1 mile distance stride-for-stride, Westly Keating, a University of Texas Pan American graduate out of Pharr, TX edged out Texas A&M Corpus Christie grad Shadrack Songok of Kenya by less than a full body width at the Alamodome finish line. Both runners, making their half-marathon debuts, finished with identical times of 1:05:24.
“It feels good,” said Keating, after his first road racing victory. “But given the conditions, I was a little concerned with the marathoners having to follow. I thought he (Songok) had better leg speed, so I tried to push the pace early.”

San Jose, CA – Meb Keflezighi, who earlier this year won the U.S. Half Marathon Championships in Houston, will line up as the favorite in this weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Jose. The fourth annual road race is scheduled to start at 8:00 am Sunday, October 4, near San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose.
Known as California’s fastest half-marathon, the event is the home to both the men’s and women’s state half-marathon records. Leading the race will be a field of California’s fastest men and women, with over half of the prize purse dedicated to Northern California competitors.
In 2004, Keflezighi, of Mammoth Lakes, California, became the first American man to win an Olympic marathon medal since Frank Shorter captured the silver in 1976. The same year he followed up his Olympic performance with a second-place finish at the ING New York City Marathon, establishing himself as one of the U.S.’s premier distance runners.
“The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Jose comes at the right time in my training for the upcoming ING New York City Marathon,” said Keflezighi. “I hope to run strong and finish the race, unlike my attempt in 2006. I would like to have a positive outcome, hopefully a new personal best time and a victory.”
