New Orleans: Entertainment

Your Post-Race Concert Festival Lineup featuring Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and KONGOS!

Kongos_body

The brothers KONGOS — multi-cultural, multi-faceted, multi-instrumentalists — craft a unique and irresistible sound spawned from shared DNA, diverse influences and spot-on melodic and lyrical sensibilities. On “Lunatic,” their 12-song Epic Records debut, the band’s talent shines on “Come With Me Now”; the title an impossible-to-resist aural summons, the rock-alt crossover tune kicking off with the accordion, jumping into foot-stomping, staccato rhythms, slide guitar, and soaring epic soundscapes reminiscent of U2. “I’m Only Joking,” whose lyrics hint at the album’s title, hits the mark with decisive tribal rhythms and Pink Floyd-esque mysterious modern rock. Thanks to an earlier self-release of “Lunatic,” KONGOS are already stars overseas, playing their numerous hits off “Lunatic” for crowds of up to 65,000 at South African festivals and touring the Republic with Linkin Park, and the UK and Europe with AWOLNATION and Dispatch. With a Feb-March North American tour with Airborne Toxic Event and alternative and rock radio hot on “Come With Me Now” and “I’m Only Joking,” (not to mention “Come With Me Now” in promos for NFL, NBA and ESPN), 2014 is quickly shaping up as the year the U.S. catches KONGOS fever.

Kilts Photo

The Kilts

Kilts of Many Colours Pipe Band started out as one guy learning how to play the bagpipes in 1996. He became proficient, and was asked to play at several local functions. In 2000, another guy wanted to learn how, but couldn’t find a teacher. So, he called the police. No, really, the guy asked the police if they knew of any bagpipers in the area. They told him a piper would be playing the next day for Police Memorial Week in Covington, La. The guy went to the event and convinced the piper to teach him how to play the bagpipes. From there, word of mouth (along with some pressure from family and friends) caused others to join in the fun.
A decade later Kilts of Many Colours Pipe Band now has 15 pipers and eight drummers and during Mardi Gras can boast some world class talent that joins us for the parades extending our numbers. Our local group has nationally rated members who compete individually in bagpipe and drum competitions across the United States. Our Pipe Major, Steven Brownlee, is an awarding winning piper who has played for royalty, both Mardi Gras and British..
